PM Najib can shower goodies, but Harapan can uplift civil servants - Nurul Izzah

While the prime minister showers civil servants with a windfall of allocations, Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar upped the ante saying Pakatan Harapan could make their lives better.
"Although civil servants have received all sorts of gifts, I feel sorry for them because they are not freed from the burden of GST, sky-high rising cost of living and rising prices, all of which are problems caused by the poor fundamentals of the prime minister's administration," she said in a statement.
She was commenting on Prime Minister Najib Razak's various benefits for the civil service announced over the past weeks as he prepares for the general election.
Najib's allocations, she said, were only "sweeteners for the coming election" and would not solve their problems on the whole.
Nurul accused the allocations as were the "traditional tactics" to "shut the mouths of the officials so they would continue to support BN", and was a form of "subtle bribery".
Harapan, she said, offered civil servants a holistic solution to better their lives, as well as unshackle them from political pressures.
"We want a civil service that serves the people and are loyal to the Agong and federal constitution, and not be forced to bow to the whims of politicians and ministers who, year after year, manipulate public officers for their own political interests."
Sad statistics
She said BN's poor governance was evident with the fact in 2016, half the civil service officers earned under RM 3,900, placing them in the lowest salary group of B40.
"It's only when the election comes are they given any increments, albeit out of political interests.
She added Cuepacs data shows nearly 60 percent public officers do not own homes despite having served long in the civil service.
"I also sympathise with the 300,000 applicants of the Projek Perumahan Awam 1 Malaysia (PPA1M) scheme, which only saw 200,000 units built when the demand exceeded 300,000 and is increasing," she added.
She said if elected, Harapan promises to commit to raising the welfare and payscale of public officers in a structured manner.
"The Harapan government is also committed to implementing structural reforms in the public sector by freeing it from influence of political parties," she said.
"In the public service, room should be given to capable public officers to take the lead in the country's administration.
"I am confident public officers today desire change, because they are the ones who know best the weaknesses of the present ruling party.
"As the 14th general election looms, I believe public officers will make us of the voice of their secret ballot to save the future of Malaysia together." - Mkini
