The “who’s in and who’s out” question is expected to have a surprise element when Sarawak DAP announces its candidates for five parliamentary constituencies on Monday.
They will be for Bandar Kuching, Stampin, Mas Gading, Serian and Bintulu.
This according to a party insider who spoke to Malaysiakini after a press conference by state DAP chairperson Chong Chieng Jen (above) at the party’s Batu Kawah service centre today.
He said: “There will be some surprises but please wait for April 23. I cannot tell you anything more.”
Earlier when speaking at the press conference Chong said party stalwart and national adviser Lim Kit Siang would be present on Monday to announce the candidate list for the five constituencies.
“On April 23, we will make the official announcement on the party's candidates who will be contesting in GE14 for these five seats that we are going to contest,” Chong said.
DAP will contest nine seats for GE14. The candidates for the four other seats of Sibu, Lanang Kapit, and Sarikei have already been announced.
Oscar Ling will be contesting in Sibu, while Andrew Wong Ling Biu will stand in Sarikei. Alice Lau and Paren Nyawi will be contesting in Lanang and Kapit respectively.
Also present today were Stampin incumbent MP Julian Tan (above), Chong’s special assistant Dr Kelvin Yii and Pending assemblyperson Violet Yong.
Battle royale?
Chong who is also Kota Sentosa assemblyperson and state Pakatan Harapan chairperson said the party wanted to maximise the chances of winning with the objective of changing the federal government.
He also confirmed that PKR will contest in Puncak Borneo. Willie Mongin, who is PKR Puncak Borneo branch chief is the likely candidate to be selected for the constituency.
Meanwhile, there is rife speculation on the ground that Yii who was slated to contest Stampin may be moved over to another constituency. This may be what Monday’s surprise element is to be.
Yii could be making way for Chong to take on SUPP president Dr Sim Kui Hian who is also strongly speculated to contest Stampin.
If Chong locks horns with Sim it will be a battle royale worth waiting for.
The stomping ground in Stampin offers a potential “local derby” that could possibly inject new verve into Chinese party politics in Sarawak. - Mkini
