'Tangkap MO1' activist allowed to sit final exams, withdraws appeal

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia student activist Asheeq Ali Sethi Alivi has withdrawn his appeal to the Federal Court on his suspension for participating in the "Tangkap Malaysian Official 1" rally two years ago
This came after the university allowed him to sit for his final examination.
Asheeq's counsel Surendra Ananth confirmed with Malaysiakini today that the suit was withdrawn.
In a Facebook posting yesterday, the activist said he had agreed to an out-of-court settlement but his struggle to fight against Umno and BN would continue.
"UKM has agreed to take action so I could sit for my final exams in three months time and my suspension would not have an impact on my graduation.
"Although this is not the end goal, it is a victory for me," Asheeq said, adding that many questioned why he made his suspension a big issue.
Asheeq replied that if he did not mount a challenge, his voice would not have been heard.
He also thanked his team of lawyers and funders.
Asheeq filed the motion for leave to appeal last month, after his one-month suspension sentence was reinstated by the university authorities when he lost his appeal in the Court of Appeal.
The court dismissed his appeal on the grounds that no error was made by the High Court judge, who ruled that Asheeq should file the challenge via a judicial review and not an originating summons.
It was reported that Asheeq, then a third-year student, was suspended for one semester for participating in the Tangkap MO1 rally on Aug 27, 2016.
The rally was organised following the US Department of Justice's (DOJ) court filing, which said MO1 received US$731 million that allegedly originated from 1MDB.

Cabinet minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan had said that MO1 is Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, but he was not named because he was not subject to the DOJ lawsuit.
Najib denied any wrongdoing and has also been exonerated by attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali. - Mkini
