Waytha offers to fight Subra in Segamat

PETALING JAYA: Hindraf chairman P Waythamoorthy has declared that he is willing to challenge MIC president S Subramaniam in his home turf of Segamat.

He said he was offering Pakatan Harapan his candidacy for the Segamat seat in case Subramaniam decides against accepting a DAP challenge to stand in Ipoh Barat, which has the largest number of Indian voters in the country.

He said Subramaniam was unlikely to accept that challenge.

Waythamoorthy praised Ipoh Barat incumbent M Kulasegaran for issuing the challenge, saying it was brave of him to risk the seat he has held for DAP for three terms.

“If Subramaniam wants to show that he is a leader of Indians, he should take on Kulasegaran’s challenge,” he said, but he noted that the health minister had announced that he would defend his seat.

Waythamoorthy offered to take on Subramaniam as a PKR candidate.

“If PKR is willing to let me stand in Segamat, I will go there,” he said. “ Since he won’t leave Segamat, I will take the challenge to him.

“For Pakatan Harapan to win a seat held by an MIC president and federal minister, it must choose a winnable candidate, and I believe I can win.”

In the last general election, PKR candidate Chua Jui Meng lost to Subramaniam by 1,217 votes.

It is understood that Chua, a former federal minister, is no longer politically active. -- FMT
