NEW YORK: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has arrived here for a five-day working visit to the 73rd United Nations General Assembly.
The aircraft carrying the Prime Minister, who was accompanied by his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, landed in heavy rain at the Westchester White Plains Airport here at 1.12am Wednesday (Sept 26) Malaysian time.
They were welcomed on arrival by Datuk Seri Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob, the Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the United Nations and Jeremiah Oliver Jitos, the Consul-General of Malaysia in New York, as well as their spouses.
The Prime Minister's motorcade then headed for The Plaza Hotel where he will be staying during his visit here.
Dr Mahathir arrived here from the United Kingdom where he was on the first leg of a working visit from Sept 21-25.
Also in New York to accompany the Prime Minister are Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu and Health Minister Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.
Dr Mahathir will deliver Malaysia's national statement at the UN assembly's General Debate on Friday (Sept 28).
He is also scheduled to speak at several other events and hold bilateral meetings with a number of national leaders during his visit here, including British Prime Minister Theresa May, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Sri Lankan President Maiththripala Sirisena.
Dr Mahathir will leave New York on Saturday (Sept 29) and head to the United Kingdom for the second leg of his working visit there from Sept 29 to Oct 1.-Star
