PAS votes to reject UEC, wants religious school certs recognised

PAS MUKTAMAR | Delegates at the 64th PAS muktamar voted unanimously today to reject Putrajaya's proposal to recognise the United Examination Certification (UEC) of Chinese independent high schools.
The delegates also passed a separate motion, which was not debated, urging the government to recognise certification from non-state religious schools, namely maahad tahfiz and pondok schools.
The motion on religious school certification was brought by Lenggong PAS, which said that recognition for university entry and employment is important to uphold the Islamic education system.
The motion on UEC, which was proposed by the PAS Ulama wing, was first debated among the delegates.
Representing the Ulama wing, Zulkifli Ismail said UEC recognition would not bode well for the country's unity, claiming that the syllabus used was imported from China.
"The education system must contain elements that encourage harmony and peace among the people in the country.
"This would not be possible unless it is formulated by taking into account the country's history and unique socio-cultural factors," he said.
Zulkifli warned that the recognition of the UEC was a "dangerous" demand.
"It will become a thorn in the flesh for the country in the long-term, where a generation will be created who do not understand the country's socio-cultural and racial diversity, nor interact with others well," he said.
Apart from the motion on UEC and Muslim religious schools, seven other motions were also approved.
One key motion was to give the syura council the mandate to decide on PAS' future in the opposition, considering the interests of Islam.
Two others motions raised by PAS Youth and passed without debate called for the party to strengthen the Gagasan Sejahtera coalition, and spearhead efforts for unity towards ensuring the survival of Muslim-Malay politics.
A joint motion by the Ulama and Muslimat wings called for PAS to urge the country's leaders to be strict on matters pertaining to the special position of Islam as stipulated in the Federal Constitution.
They also wanted PAS to urge the government to take stern action against those who make statements against Islam, to find a solution to social problems, including LGBT relations, and to take make it easier for state religious authorities to solve these issues under syariah law.
In a separate motion, the Muslimat wing also called for the party to empower its Supporters wing (DHPP), so that the party would be more appealing to non-Muslims.
Labuan PAS' motion for an East Malaysian taskforce was also approved by the muktamar.
Among the objectives mentioned for this proposal were to synergise PAS activities in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan, and to rejuvenate PAS' approach in Borneo. -Mkini
