A RELIGIOUS teacher and founder of a charitable home in Kuala Lumpur, Zahari Alwi, was jailed for 15 months on two counts of outraging the modesty of a 10-year-old child placed under his care, and for possessing pornographic material, according to the Malay-language Harian Metro daily.
Zahari, 56, pleaded guilty to attacking the victim while the young girl was taking a shower and to owning the porn. He had earlier pleaded not guilty when he was charged in February.
Magistrate Haslinda A. Raof ordered that Zahari be sentenced to 15 months for the first offence, and 13 months for the second offence. Both sentences are to be served concurrently from his arrest on January 16, reported Harian Metro.
Zahari, who has two wives, was the founder of a home for orphans and underprivileged children where his victims were placed.
On Tuesday, Federal Territories Minister Khalid Samad ordered the closure of the Darul As-Syabab tahfiz school after its principal was charged for sodomising at least nine boys studying at the centre.
Khalid had also ordered Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to clamp down on other illegal tahfiz centres.
Earlier this year in March, a 41-year-old man who volunteered at a tahfiz school in Kuantan was slapped with 38 charges of sexual assault and sodomy against 10 students.
Four months later, a 21-year-old tahfiz teacher in Taman Keramat Permai, Hulu Klang, was arrested for forcing a student to perform oral sex on him several times.
