A DAP assemblyperson has expressed regret that certain quarters are politicising non-Muslims elected representatives handing out zakat (tithes) during Ramadan.
Seri Delima assemblyperson Syerleena Abdul Rashid said the issue, raised on social media by certain parties, has been "blown out of proportion."
"Zakat is still given by Muslims to Muslims and in areas where non-Muslim representatives are present, they can help disperse or distribute it," she told Malaysiakini.
"This has been done for decades even before the change of government (for both state and federal).
"This should not cloud our judgment and sway us from embracing the true meaning of Ramadan."
Syerleena's remarks came after Penang Mufti Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor (photo) said Penang Zakat (ZPP) has channelled tithes via Muslim and non-Muslim representatives, and that this should not be made into an issue.
"As long as there is no malpractice, in my opinion, it need not be turned into an issue.
"As mufti, I wish to urge Muslims not to blow up a trifling matter like this, but on the other hand, they must be more focused on important matters like how to spur economic development and education of Muslims so they can achieve a higher position and be on par with the other races," he was quoted as saying in Bernama yesterday.
The issue came to light when non-Muslim DAP lawmakers were criticised on social media for handing out tithes to Muslims.
Syerleena, who is also Penang DAP assistant publicity secretary and the party's Women national committee member, said it is obvious that parties who politicise such matters want everyone to forget the scandals their leaders are embroiled in, like the "great swindles of Tabung Haji monies and 1MDB."
"I am disappointed because the matter should not even be an issue in the first place. Malaysians deserve better narratives and we should focus on rebuilding our nation.
"There is too much negativity and hate politics in this country. It is not healthy for this nation," she added.
To counter the negativity, Syerleena is organising an iftar event at Masjid Jamek Sungai Gelugor on June 1 at 6.30pm, where all races are invited to break fast in the mosque.
Wan Salim is also expected to attend the event, she said. - Mkini
