PBS loses second assemblyman after Labuk rep defects to Warisan

KOTA KINABALU: Opposition Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) was dealt a second blow after Labuk assemblyman Abdul Rahman Kongkawang left the party to join the ruling Parti Warisan Sabah led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.
Rahman, who made the announcement at a press conference here with Shafie, said that he resigned as member of PBS on Thursday (Sept 26) via a letter to the party's secretary-general Datuk Jahid Jahim.
“My decision was difficult as it is with sadness that I leave PBS. But I am sure that they will accept my decision with an open heart because I am doing with sincerity for the interest of my people.
“It is not for personal gain, ” he told the media after Shafie announced that Warisan was accepting Rahman.

Rahman is the second of six PBS assemblymen to quit the party after Datuk Anita Baranting left in March to join Warisan.

PBS is now left with five assemblymen in the 65-member house while Warisan and its partners DAP, Upko, PKR and Sabah Bersatu hold 57 seats, with the opposition PBS, Sabah STAR and Umno holding the remaining eight seats.
Shafie said that Rahman showed his interest in joining Warisan during the Sandakan by-election in May but he had told him to wait.
“We had to consider and screen him. We are sure he (Rahman) will be able to help us reach the rural community in his constituency, ” said Shafie when accepting the Labuk assemblyman from Sabah’s east coast Beluran district.
Rahman said he hoped that he would be able to contribute more to the rural community instead of politicking. - Star
