We live in a hyper competitive world where we are expected to be on our toes and keep running.
It also depends where you want to go in life.
That sounds like a cute slogan, but it really does. If you really want to have a family, and to just make enough money to get along, but to focus on home and health, it will take you quite far enough. My father, for example, profoundly honest and hard working, was sorry that he was not a great success in business - but looking back, I see he got far in life in ways that mattered to him. He turned down a job that would have advanced him to a more important stage, because he did not want to spend so much time away from his family, and though he was sorry not to be more successful I could see he was happy in his life. He and my mother had a lot of fun and adventure, he read widely, he enjoyed us, and enjoyed his work as well, and so on.
To go far in many areas of life, hard work is absolutely necessary but you need other qualities as well - these generally include persistence, and might also include talent, personal charm, a network of important connections, a particular skill, and even luck.
- Name a field, and you will find a toxic competition.
- Whether it is academics, jobs, sports, entrepreneurship, politics or even trading & investments, the competition is huge.
- There is nothing called safe haven and easy life. Everyone is entangled in their own “mess”.
- The rewards are limited but the contestants are unlimited (metaphorically).
- Due to this, the competition is getting refined and steep with each passing day.
- Moreover, we are easily replaceable. So, we can't be complacent even after getting a success.
Hence, I don't think hard work and sincerity will “always” lead to the success. Like Sam Ewing says: "It's not the hours you put in your work that counts, it's the work you put in the hours."
