Unfazed Madani backers “celebrate” Hannah Yeoh’s RM250k award in Musa Hassan defamation case

“SING when you are winning” is an album by British pop star Robbie Williams from 2000. It might be surmised that a few DAP supporters are happily having it on repeat on their playlists at the moment.

First, there was National DAP publicity secretary Yeo Bee Yin’s social media post joyously calling it another reason to celebrate this year end (2025)” after the Kuala Lumpur High Court rejected disgraced former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s request to serve his SRC International Sdn Bhd sentence in the comforts of his palatial home.

That seemingly innocuous posting so inflamed the feelings of UMNO Youth members that it has been used as an excuse to sever ties with DAP in the Madani government.

The latest DAP “victory” comes in the shape of another court case and seemingly unperturbed by the fallout of the last incident, DAP supporters have flooded social media with more celebratory messages.

This time around, it is in relation to the Court of Appeal’s decision to award RM250,000 in damages to Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh in a defamation suit against ex-IGP (Inspector General of Police) Tan Sri Musa Hassan.

The appellate court delivered its decision upon concluding hearings on the appeal last October.

The case stemmed from remarks made by Musa at a Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) forum on Jan 30, 2020 whereby he alleged that an unnamed group linked to DAP was attempting to undermine Islam.

In so doing, Musa who retired from the police force on Sept 12, 2010 claimed that Yeoh had written a book entitled Becoming Hannah: A Personal Journey with the intention of turning Malaysia into a Christian country.

Recall that the Kuala Lumpur High Court had on Dec 23, 2024 dismissed the Segambut MP’s lawsuit by ruling that she had failed to establish that the former IGP’s statements were defamatory.

However, Judge Datuk Azimah Omar (now Federal Court judge) who led a three-man bench comprising Datuk Dr Choo Kah Sing and Datuk Dr Shahnaz Sulaiman unanimously reversed the KL High Court judicial commissioner’s decision.

Cause for celebration

In all fairness, many saw the Court of Appeal’s decision as welcome warning to those who sought to sow discord by spreading falsities and fear-mongering.

The mood was definitely upbeat on the former Sports and Youth Minister’s Facebook page with many declaring it an early “angpow” for the upcoming Lunar New Year.

Some declared that this case will serve as a lesson to those who try to inflame the situation. Every action has its consequences, warned one commenter.

Similar sentiments were found on the Free Malaysia Today’s Facebook page that shared the news of the Court of Appeal’s decision – CNY had come early for the 47-year-old Subang Jaya native.

Some had some choice words of advice for the retired copper – best to spend time with his grandkids instead of spreading unfounded conspiracy theories.  One simply pointed out that loose lips led to empty pockets.

However, one commenter quite rightly pointed out that the final decision on the matter will probably lie with the Federal Court as the defendant was sure to appeal.

But the overall sentiment seems to be that “justice has prevailed” with many seeing this decision as validation that the country’s justice system is not entirely broken given that even a top former civil servant is not above the law.

The mood among many citizens was upbeat in that they believed this case would signal the end of politicians and other interested parties from simply spewing scarcely believable theories that are nothing more than exercises in fear-mongering.

While some questioned the ability of the retired copper’s ability to stump up the cash, others believed the threat of being declared a bankrupt should deter others from following suit.

Whether the sum is paid up, at the very least this judgement serves as a moral victory for Yeoh, hence DAP supporters should celebrate it as such. –  Focus Malaysia
