Anwar to welcome Modi at KLIA

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, has confirmed that he will welcome his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, later today.

Modi, who will undertake a two-day official visit starting today, is expected to arrive at approximately 4pm at the Bunga Raya Complex, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

"Yes, I will be welcoming him," Anwar told reporters after watching the film Taj Mahal: An Eternal Love Story, directed by his long-time friend Akbar Khan, at a cinema in IOI City Mall here last night.

Wisma Putra, in a statement, said Modi's official visit this weekend is at the invitation of the Prime Minister.

The visit is a reciprocal follow-up to Anwar's official trip to India in August 2024.

Modi will be accompanied by India's Minister of External Affairs, Dr S Jaishankar, as well as senior Indian government officials.

He is scheduled to receive an official welcome at the Perdana Putra Complex, followed by a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister at the Sri Perdana Complex.

Wisma Putra said both leaders are expected to discuss bilateral relations and explore opportunities for cooperation between Malaysia and India, particularly in trade and investment, defence and security, labour, tourism, connectivity, agriculture, and education.

The discussions will also cover regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Bilateral trade between Malaysia and India reached RM79.49 billion in 2025, with Malaysia's exports to India totalling RM52.30 billion and imports from India amounting to RM27.19 billion.

Malaysia's main exports to India include palm oil and related agricultural products as well as electrical and electronic products, while imports from India consist of agricultural products, petroleum products, and chemical products.
