UMNO President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has denied claims that UMNO and PAS met to discuss the revival of Muafakat Nasional (MN) for now.
“There is no discussion regarding that matter,” he said to reporters at Dataran Putrajaya on Friday (June 5).
He did not deny that a political meeting between UMNO and PAS was held, but it did not involve the presidents of the parties.
The meeting was more focused on issues of political collaboration and the national agenda.
He also said at present, the priority of UMNO and Barisan Nasional is to ensure that the political stability of the country continues to be preserved through cooperation in the unity government.
“The most important thing is to continue maintaining the existing government until the end of the 15th Parliamentary term,” he said.
His statement comes after PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang has confirmed that PAS and Umno leaders met last night amid calls for a revival of the MN alliance.
However, he played down the gathering as just a “regular meeting”, saying he was not involved.
“We meet those (UMNO leaders) who want to meet us. I wasn’t involved, but they informed me about it,” the Marang MP told reporters at Masjid Rusila, Terengganu, on Friday.
PAS vice-president Datuk Idris Ahmad and secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan are said to have been among those who attended the meeting at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
UMNO’s political bureau also met yesterday, reportedly at the same hotel.
On Thursday (June 4), the PAS Youth Council of Malaysia invited UMNO to return to revive political cooperation through MN to face the upcoming Johor state election. — Focus Malaysia
