'Dedak' vs 'ice cream' war erupts in Selangor DUN

SELANGOR DUN | Several opposition legislators cried foul over the use of the term "dedak" (animal feed) by a backbencher during the debate on Selangor's budget today.
Ng Suee Lim (DAP-Sekinchan) got the ball rolling by making snide comments about former Selangor menteri besar Muhammad Muhammad Taib's recent return to Umno.
This led to interruptions from Mohd Shamsudin Lias (BN-Sungai Burong) and Shahrum Mohd Sharif (BN-Dengkil), who pointed out that Pakatan Harapan too comprises of people who defected from BN.
Shahrum: There are those who leave DAP, but why haven't these former members rejoined DAP, now that they are more powerful?
Ng: That is the attitude - past, present and future - sometimes people defect. Why? 'Kuasa dedak' (the power of dedak)... Cash is king! If there wasn't any 'dedak', then it's a different story.
Shahrum: Madam Speaker! Madam Speaker! He said 'dedak'... That is for animals!
Ng: Madam Speaker. I have checked the Dewan Bahasa and Pustaka dictionary... 'dedak' has no bad connotations...
Mohd Shamsudin (photo): Is 'makan aiskrim'  (eating ice cream) in the dictionary too?... If Sekinchan can say 'dedak' can we say 'makan aiskrim'? If we are allowed to... we can both use 'dedak' and ice cream. If not, we both can't use 'dedak' and ice cream.
At this point, Speaker Hannah Yeoh urged lawmakers to only use words related to the budget.
Following this, senior exco member Teng Chang Khim (DAP-Sungai Pinang) stood up to defend Ng while showing the chamber his mobile phone.
"Madam Speaker. I have just referred to the dictionary. 'Dedak' means paddy husks which have been ground to powder. I don't understand why this word is offensive to the opposition," said Teng.
An incensed Rosni Sohar (BN-Hulu Bernam) immediately objected.
"Mr exco! 'Dedak' is for animals! I'm human!" she said.
After Yeoh managed to restore order, the "dedak" issue was put to rest and Ng managed to complete his speech. -Mkini
