Dr Mahathir Mohamad has weighed in on former minister Husni Hanadzlah's prediction that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak would bequeathe the nation with an administration devoid of corruption when he steps down.
In a video posted on Facebook this evening, the former premier, to the background score from one of the Harry Potter movies, said if this is the case, Najib should relinquish his post with immediate effect.
“He (Husni) said when Najib resigns, the level of corruption would decline at the time. So it is best if Najib resigns now,” he said.
Addressing Parliament on Wednesday, Husni, who was the former second finance minister, cited a Chinese philosophy of following one and not six horses.
“I am proud of (following) one horse. It means I follow one leader in one organisation which is BN and Najib. When you follow one horse and the horse makes a mistake, you can rectify it.
"My 10,000 Chinese friends and I are confident that when it is time for Najib to vacate his position... the legacy he will leave Malaysia is 'zero corruption'. That is what we think," he said.
As for the six horses, Husni said there were six of them in the opposition stable – Mahathir, Muhyiddin Yassin, Anwar Ibrahim, Lim Guan Eng, Lim Kit Siang and Mohamad Sabu.
"Can these six unite to make Malaysia good in the future? I don't believe so. The next election is about BN for the future," he said.
Husni was dropped from the cabinet in July last year. He was a major figure in 1MDB's debt repayment plan.
In the brief video, Mahathir also addressed a question on whether others would follow Husni's footsteps, shifting from a critical position on 1MDB in the past to praising Najib ahead of the general election.
The former premier said that he believes there would be many.
“There are those with sins and when the sin is shown to them, they will turn in order to avoid the sin from being exposed...,” he added, without elaborating.
Najib has denied the corruption allegations against him and accused Mahathir of conspiring to topple him from power.
His supporters have accused the former premier of attempting to engineer the political ascension of his son Mukhriz.
