PETALING JAYA: A major grocery chain has offered to take in hundreds of people affected by the impending closure of Giant hypermarket stores in several states.
Segi Value Holdings, which operates the Segi Fresh supermarkets, said many people had lined up to fill job application forms.
Its senior general manager Fong Leong told FMT that Segi Value was planning to recruit many of the staff from the affected stores as they already had experience.
This follows news on Sunday that five Giant supermarkets would cease operations on Nov 5.
A statement released by GCH retail (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd said the decision to close the stores was taken after it had “reviewed its operations and in order to improve efficiencies and productivity”.
The affected outlets are in Sri Manjung, Sungai Petani, Shah Alam City Centre (SACC) Mall, Sibu and Selayang Lama.
Fong said those who came for the interviews were not only from Giant.
“They were from other supermarkets as well which have either closed down or are rumoured to be closing down soon.
“Based on our recent walk-in interviews, those who came looking for jobs were in their 20s to 40s. Most of them had experience working in supermarkets,” he added.
According to Fong, some candidates had come from as far as Perak for the interviews.
“This shows how they are really in need of a job,” he said.
Segi Group has been in operation for over 20 years and now manages 31 outlets in Selangor, the Federal Territories, Perak, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan.
Fong said the company would be opening a new outlet every two weeks, with the upcoming outlet to be located in Alor Gajah.
“Due to the massive expansion, we are hungry for more talents and looking for more people to work with us in the future.” -FMT
