Selangor sultan misunderstood Dr M, Syed Saddiq says

Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has come to Dr Mahathir Mohamad's defence after the party chairperson was given a royal rebuke from Selangor's Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
Sultan Sharafuddin had been angered by Mahathir's "Bugis pirate" remarks, but Syed Saddiq says they may have been a misunderstanding in the matter.
"Your Majesty, based on your decree, I believe there was a misunderstanding on Mahathir's remarks. Allow me to explain this issue which was clearly politicised," Syed Saddiq said in an open letter to the monarch today.
He said he was speaking in his personal capacity and was not representing the party.
Sultan Sharafuddin today said Mahathir was inciting hatred towards the Bugis community and said he should be investigated under the Sedition Act.
Mahathir made the remarks during the Oct 14 anti-kleptocracy rally in Petaling Jaya, in reference to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's ancestry.
“Maybe he can trace his ancestry to Bugis pirates. Somehow, he lost his way and came to Malaysia. Go home to Bugis (Sulawesi)!” he had said.
In his letter, Syed Saddiq explained that Mahathir's remarks were aimed only at Najib, who had proclaimed himself to be a "Bugis warrior" during an event in Sarawak on June 2016.
"Since then, Mahathir has talked about a "Bugis warrior" in his narrative to wake up Najib who hides behind his heritage to approve of his misdeeds.
"This (Najib's actions) clearly embarrasses all Bugis," he said.
He added that Mahathir in his blog had said that "Bugis warriors" do not steal.
Mahathir has accused Najib of corruption and misappropriating public funds, charges which the prime minister denies.
Syed Saddiq continued by saying that Mahathir had said that not all Bugis were pirates and that some royals were also of Bugis ancestry.
The Bersatu Youth chief also expressed hope that Sultan Sharafuddin would side with the people to ensure prosperity.
“Fight for us Tuanku, fight for all Malaysians," he said.- Mkini
