Preacher Zamihan Mat Zin's criticism of Putrajaya's decision to build the King Salman Centre for International Peace (KSCIP) has received the backing of human rights watchdog Suaram.
In a statement today, Suaram executive director Sevan Doraisamy said it was unnecessary for Putrajaya to allocate a 16-hectare plot for the project.
"It is unnecessary, does not make sense and raises a lot of questions. There are no details about the project, nor is the KSCIP's role clear.
"On these grounds, Suaram agrees with some statements made by Zamihan," said Sevan in a statement today.
Recently, a video clip of Zamihan's lecture where he criticised the KSCIP and Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has been making rounds online.
Zamihan said Najib was "not smart" for pursuing the KSCIP and accused Saudi Arabia of being involved in the genesis of the self-styled Islamic State.
"They themselves could not contain terrorism in their own region, how could they help to fight terrorism here?" asked Zamihan (photo).
He also asked if the decision to build the KSCIP had to do with Saudi Arabia increasing the quota for haj pilgrims or whether it had to do with funds borrowed or received from Saudi Arabia.
"The 16-hectare land is bigger than the Tabung Haji complex. That’s why I said it is unrealistic and unintelligent," he said.
Zamihan has been under the spotlight of late after he was banned from preaching in Johor and Selangor due to some of his controversial remarks.
Putrajaya has claimed that Zamihan was an asset to the government because of his expertise in deradicalisation of suspected terrorists.
The KSCIP, initiated by King Salman, is a peace and anti-terror initiative currently operating in Kuala Lumpur. Putrajaya has to complete the new centre by 2018, when it will be launched by Crown Prince Mohammad Salman.- Mkini
