Who’s the Malaysian telco boss jailed for drugs in Dubai?

PETALING JAYA: There are only about a dozen telecommunication firms in Malaysia, but a report that a chief executive officer of one such company had been recently jailed in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) over a drug charge has led to a wild goose chase over the identity of the person.
This followed a Harian Metro report which quoted a source saying the unnamed CEO was detained at the Dubai International Airport for drug possession on September 18 upon arrival from Amsterdam.
The report said the individual returned to Malaysia on Tuesday after serving a sentence at UAE’s Al Aweer prison.
When contacted, Dubai police refused to give details, but merely asked FMT to contact them “via the diplomatic channels”.
But checks with Wisma Putra however drew a blank, as were checks with the police and the home ministry.
When asked, a source in the home ministry said they too were in the dark about the matter.
Major telcos have also reportedly denied any of their bosses were involved, according to popular tech discussion forum, LowYat.net.
Another telco player, when contacted by FMT, immediately rubbished any suggestion that its CEO was involved.
“No such thing… Where do you get this rubbish?” was his terse reply, before adding that he had just spoken with the CEO.
“He took a break,” he added. -FMT
