Muhyiddin pans attempt to frame 1MDB reports as 'fake news'

Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin today criticised the Communications and Multimedia Ministry for branding reports about corruption in 1MDB as "fake news".
Muhyiddin warned that the "fake news" may well be coming from the government.
"Sometimes the fake news does not come from us (opposition) but what is being described as fake news is coming from the other side (government) because they are unable to rebut the allegations against them," he told a press conference in Petaling Jaya today.
Muhyiddin stressed that the government should not try to silence the people by resorting to the "fake news" label.
He was responding to Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Jailani Johari (below) who yesterday warned that action would be taken against "fake news" about 1MDB.
Among the media he claimed were publishing "fake news" about 1MDB were The Wall Street Journal, the New York TimesThe Economist, the Australian Broadcast Corporation(ABC) and MSNBC.
The US Department of Justice (DOJ) believes at least US$4.5 billion was misappropriated from 1MDB and laundered through the US financial system to acquire various assets.
The assets were allegedly acquired for Malaysian government officials as well as for their family members and associates.
The DOJ is seeking to seize around US$1.7 billion in assets allegedly acquired using the stolen money.
The 1MDB has been reported extensively across the globe but 1MDB has to date not acknowledged that any of its funds were misappropriated. -Mkini
