DAP leader Hannah Yeoh has hit out at caretaker federal territories minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor after the latter claimedthat DAP is a chauvinist party consisting mostly of Christian evangelists.
As a caretaker minister, Yeoh said it was appalling for Tengku Adnan to "spread lies about the DAP and Christians".
"BN is showing its true colours, so divisive and offensive. Tengku Adnan's statement has hurt the DAP and the Christian community.
"As a federal minister, he should guard his mouth and not be careless with words. We await his apology," she said in a statement today.
Tengku Adnan was addressing civil servants when he made the claims during a programme in Putrajaya today.
"If they are Catholics I would believe them but when they are evangelists, new Christians, this is the problem."
Yeoh later told Malaysiakini how she was unsure who Tengku Adnan wanted to offend with his remarks.
"(He is) dividing Catholics and evangelicals. Either way you read it, it is offensive.
"And why feed civil servants with lies," she added.
Apart from creating animosity between Catholics and evangelists, Yeoh also believes that Tengku Adnan's remarks could create animosity between Christians and those of other faiths.
"So irresponsible of a federal minister. But then again, they survive on lies," she said.
This is not the first time that DAP has been accused of being a Christian evangelist party.
PAS Youth chief Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi last year declared that a vote for Harapan would ultimately be a vote for DAP, whose movements, he said, were shadowed by the Christian evangelist agenda.
Academic Kamarul Zaman Yusoff had earlier claimed that the composition of DAP's central executive committee was proof that the party has a Christianisation agenda.
Kamarul Zaman had also lodged a police report against Yeoh for allegedly proselytising in her biography “Becoming Hannah: A Personal Journey”, claiming that the book contained "too many stories and quotations from the Bible" and might influence him and others to become Christian.
In return, Yeoh lodged a police report against the Universiti Utara Malaysia lecturer for allegedly defaming her in an article, titled “Hannah Yeoh contoh hipokrasi terbesar DAP” (Hannah Yeoh is the biggest example of DAP hypocrisy).
Yeoh's biography is an account of her life after she rose to prominence following her win as the Subang Jaya assemblyperson in 2008. - Mkini
