PETALING JAYA: Many mobile phone subscribers are wondering if the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has taken to spamming the public with random text messages.
This came after many received a message on their phones from a sender listed as “MCMC”.
Even more puzzling is that there is no sender’s number shown and only the name “MCMC” is shown in the recipient’s phone inbox.
The text message reads: “Meraikan 20 tahun Akta Komunikasi & Multimedia 1998. Rakyat terus mengecapi nikmat kemajuan teknologi. Jadilah rakyat digital yang hebat.” (“Celebrating 20 years of the Communications & Multimedia Act 1998. The people continue to enjoy technological advancements. Be a great digital citizen.”)
The message has been shared on social media with many users asking if it was really sent out by the body tasked with regulating the communications and multimedia industry.
Social activist Marina Mahathir is among those who shared a screenshot of the message that she received from “MCMC”.
“Anyone else got this? They forgot who set up MCMC izzit? Tsk, tsk! #GE14” she wrote on her Twitter account.
Lawyer-activist Eric Paulsen, who also received the spam message, said: “If this is indeed from MCMC, I think there is a case to be made for an offence under the Communications & Multimedia Act.”
Another lawyer-activist, Shahredzan Johan, who received the message twice, said: “Yes, MCMC sent me twice. Just in case, I didn’t get the first one.”
PKR’s communications director Fahmi Fadzil tweeted: “When @SKMM_MCMC drops unannounced. #ThanksNoThanks”.
Another Twitter user Kyen asked: “Hi @SKMM_MCMC, did this message come from you?”
MCMC has yet to respond to FMT’s queries about the message. -FMT
