Mahathir: I can win Langkawi or any other seat

GE14 | Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is a confident man.
So confident, in fact, that he has assured that not only will he win Langkawi in the coming polls, but that he could win in any seat he is fielded in.
Shockingly still, he attributed part of the reason to his political rival, caretaker prime minister Najib Abdul Razak, as he said that should Pakatan Harapan decide to field him in any other seat, Najib would be sure to start handing out goodies to the residents there.
“(I won’t just win in Langkawi), I feel that should I choose (to contest in) Kubang Pasu, I can win there too, hence, I previously said I could contest in Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Putrajaya or anywhere.
“The reason is wherever I (choose) to go, I will be followed by Najib in the form of gifts. That is why people like me whenever I visit.
“That is why I don’t limit (my visits) to Langkawi, although I have always said I will contest in Langkawi as (BN) won there with an 11,000-vote majority, so we want to see how many votes they will get this time around,” the Harapan chairperson said during a press conference at Bersatu headquarters today.
It was previously revealed that Mahathir, who is also Bersatu chairperson, was slated to contest in Langkawi. Other seats were considered, including his former Kubang Pasu constituency and Putrajaya.
The 92-year-old was officially named the opposition coalition’s candidate for the Langkawi parliamentary seat on Sunday, by PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, after stepping down as prime minister 15 years ago.
BN’s Nawawi Ahmad won the Langkawi parliamentary seat in the 2013 election, defeating PKR’s Ahmad Abdullah with an 11,861-vote majority.
Meanwhile, when asked about the defection of 4,000 Alor Mengkudu Bersatu members to Umno, Mahathir speculated that they must have been bribed by Umno.
“We are aware that Umno has a lot of money, as can be seen by the number of flags they have put up. (They) must have given money to obtain support.
“In Langkawi, a division committee member has been bought, and we expect this trend of buying out people to continue until nomination day,” he said. - Mkini
