Sivarasa shoots demand letter to Umno man over Ijok land deal

Lawyers representing incumbent Subang MP (now Sungai Buloh) Sivarasa Rasiah (above) have sent a letter of demand to Umno supreme council member Irmohizam Ibrahim, for alleged defamation.
This is in relation to Irmohizam - who is also incumbent Kuala Selangor MP - making a statement alleging Sivarasa was involved in a scam to cheat the Ijok settlers.
Sivarasa's lawyers from the firm of Daim and Gamany said Irmohizam's claim was false, malicious and defamatory.
"The falsity of the allegations is well known to you as our client and representatives of the Selangor government had earlier issued several statements stating the real facts to the case," the letter of demand sighted by Malaysiakini states, adding that the reports were published in the print and online media.
"The words were calculated to injure our client's reputation as a public figure," the letter added.
The letter dated today was sent to Irmohizam following publication of the statement after which Sivarasa sought from him a public retraction and apology within seven days.
Sivarasa, who is also PKR supreme council member, had threatened to take legal action against Irmohizam (below) after the latter claimed possible conflict of interests in the in the RM1.18 billion settlement reached between Ijok settlers and two private developers in 2015.
The deal was facilitated by the current caretaker Selangor administration under PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali.
In his statement, Irmohizam alleged: “Without the knowledge and agreement of the original settlers committee and the settlers, this new committee of 16 members then appointed PKR MP R Sivarasa's law firm Daim & Gamany to represent the settlers.
“Serious questions are raised over a possible conflict of interest over the appointment of this lawyer due to their fees being paid by the crony developers and his political links to the Selangor government,” he said adding there were documents to show that Daim & Gamany's fees would be paid by the two developers.
“Due to this conflict of interest, many settlers are uncertain if they had received the best advice to protect their interests,” he claimed.
The two companies – LBCN Development Sdn Bhd and Mujur Zaman Sdn Bhd – were involved in a tussle over the 2,200-acre land with the previous Selangor administration under then menteri besar Khalid Ibrahim.
On March 14, Malay daily Berita Harian reported that a group of 113 unhappy Ijok settlers had filed an injunction against Azmin and five other defendants, among others, to demand higher compensation to be paid, based on the current value of their land.

About two weeks later, another group of Ijok settlers held a press conference at the State Secretariat building and said that their long-standing issues have been resolved by the state government under Azmin.
BN had taken issue with the RM1.18 billion settlement, asking why the compensation was just a fraction of the land sale value, and why the matter was settled before undergoing a due legal process in the Federal Court. - Mkini
