MCA No 2 decries ‘paparazzi hunting’ following photo insult

GE14 | MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong today claimed he fell victim to cyber-bullying when his photo was put up online and his simple act of eating at a kopitiam was politicised by a member of the public.
Deeming the act as “paparazzi hunting”, Wee said the incident occurred this morning as he was having a meal at a table marked ‘reserved’ at a restaurant in Pudu in Kuala Lumpur.
Someone, he said, had taken a snapshot of this and later uploaded the photo online along with crude words and derogatory comments alluding to the fact that he was arrogant and was taking a leaf out of caretaker Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng’s book in trying to appear more people-friendly.
He showed reporters the offending post on his mobile phone.
The photo showed Wee seated at the restaurant table with the ‘reserved’ sign circled in yellow.
The photo was accompanied with the caption: “(Wee) pretending to be friendly? Learning from Lim Guan Eng by having meals at a kopitiam? But this unintentionally exposes the arrogance of the ‘Big Official’…really arrogant! You should now know what to do, voters of Ayer Hiram and Yong Peng.”
“Just a regular customer”
The caretaker minister in the prime minister’s department denied harbouring such intentions and said, in fact, it was the owner of the restaurant who had arranged for him to be seated at the reserved table.
"The owner of the restaurant told me there was a vacant seat when I arrived. That's why I sat there. Is this considered a heinous crime?
“The restaurant put a ‘reserved’ sign on the table, and that turned into 'Wee is acting big'. What should I do if each table I sit at places a ‘reserved’ sign?"
He expressed disappointment that even the act of having a meal can be politicised in such a manner.
"This is ridiculous. Am I the subject of paparazzi hunting now? Is it an issue even when I'm having tea at a kopitiam? Let's have a gentlemanly contest, don't do that,”
Furthermore, Wee pointed out that since joining politics in the 1990s, he has held numerous press conferences in restaurants, not to mention the many times he simply wanted to grab a meal.
“I was just a regular customer.
"If you are keen, I can bring you to different restaurants for tea… not those big restaurants. If you ask me where to get delicious char siew, wantan mee or meehoon with pork, I can let you know where the best food courts are,” he said.
Wee had been speaking to reporters following a handover ceremony of the official approval letter on donation of land tax to SRJK(C) La Salle at Sri Petaling today.
He was asked by reporters if the caretaker federal government would follow the Penang and Selangor caretaker governments in returning their official cars.
He replied that the law never required a caretaker government to return their official vehicles, but it was well within the rights of the two state governments to resort to such political manoeuvrings.
"Luckily I do not drive any official car, if not, it could become another issue." - Mkini
