Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Shahidan Kassim today thanked PAS for supporting the Anti-Fake News Bill 2018.
This is because the bill, when it becomes law, will be in line with Islamic teachings, he said.
"With this law, the rakyat will be protected. I am very thankful to all parties, including PAS, for supporting the bill.
"It is in line with Islamic law, pertaining to fake news. I'm sure all my friends (in Parliament) who supported the bill, did so in the interest of the people, and not that of the BN government.
"Not only ministers, but the people too, sometimes fall victim to fake news, but they don't get any protection," Shahidan told reporters in Parliament today.
Shahidan was responding to a question on the support given to the bill by 11 PAS MPsin attendance in Parliament yesterday. It was passed with a vote of 123 for, and 64 against.
The Islamist party's backing had elicited criticisms from Pakatan Harapan lawmakers, who said the former had its own agenda, in supporting the law. -Mkini
