Amanah strategy director Dzulkefly Ahmad has proposed a two-day holiday if Pakatan Harapan emerges victorious in the 14th general election on May 9.
Dzulkefly said this was to address the issue of the Election Commission (EC) setting polling day on a Wednesday, which is a working day and will require working voters to take leave.
He said by declaring the subsequent Thursday and Friday a public holiday, voters can have an extended weekend without the need to rush back to work.
“If Harapan wins, a Harapan government will declare May 10 and 11 a public holiday to encourage and convince voters to return to vote, and then celebrate the people’s victory,” he said in a Twitter posting.
When contacted, Dzulkefly confirmed he had made the proposal to the Harapan presidential council meeting earlier today.
“That was my suggestion for the consideration of the Pakatan Harapan leadership. I made the proposal to the presidential council earlier today.
“They said in the meeting that they are considering it,” he said.
Dzulkefly added this was a compelling proposition to encourage voters to return home to vote.
The EC today announced that nomination day will fall on April 28 while polling day will be on May 9.
