NEW YORK – Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s political comeback and his longevity wowed the speakers and moderator at the Bloomberg Global Business Forum 2018.
The session held on the sidelines of the 73rd United Nations here include Dr Mahathir and his counterparts from Holland, Mark Rutte, and New Zealand’s Jacinda Ardern as speakers.
Rutte and Ardern were impressed by the response Dr Mahathir gave to a question by moderator Fareed Zakaria on his secret of staying healthy despite his age.
“I do keep to a strict diet,” said Dr Mahathir.
“I don’t overeat. I do a little exercise, and I have six hours of sleep. If you live a fairly well regulated life, you would survive,” he added.
This prompted Fareed to jokingly remark that the most important thing was to pick one’s parents carefully.
“This means you and I can still be Prime Minister at 90,” Rutte said in turn to Ardern, drawing laughter and applause from the panellists and audience.
Fareed then ended the session by complimenting Dr Mahathir on his comeback as Prime Minister.
“I do think this is the ultimate political comeback in my 25 years of watching politics, I don’t think there’s another one like it,” he said.
