BEIJING: To produce quality athletes who could carry the good name of the country, the youth and sports ministry (KBS) is planning to introduce a Malaysian culture module as additional knowledge for the group.
Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Steven Sim Chee Keong, said an athlete who is representing the country is actually a mini ambassador of Malaysian culture.
“For example, when they are representing the country at international sport championships, their friends from other countries would asked about Malaysia and so with the basic knowledge, they would be more at ease to explain.
“Apart from that, it is a good platform to help promote the Malaysian culture to people from other countries,” he told Bernama after a goodwill gathering with Malaysian students in Beijing at a breaking of fast at the Malaysian Embassy, tonight.
The session was attended by 100 students as well as the representative of the Malaysian Embassy in China.
When asked on the content of the module, Sim said the ministry would discuss it with the National Sports Council and related agencies to look into the initiative in detail.
“Apart from athletes, we are also planning to introduce the module to MyCorps volunteer groups under the ministry.
“Volunteerism under MyCorps will not only focus on domestic activities but will also cover foreign countries,” he said.
Sim is currently on a six-day working visit to Beijing from Tuesday to represent the government at a conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilisations - FMT
