11 more safety cameras to be installed at accident-prone areas

Deputy Transport Minister Kamarudin Jaffar speaks to reporters in Petaling Jaya today.
PETALING JAYA: The transport ministry says another 11 automated awareness safety system or Awas cameras will be installed at accident-prone locations over the next two months to reduce accident rates and improve road safety.
Deputy Transport Minister Kamarudin Jaffar said the installation of cameras at highways, sponsored by Plus Malaysia Bhd (PLUS), would help cut down on accidents caused by drivers who speed.
“This is in addition to the existing 19 cameras installed by the Road Transport Department.
“It is a good approach to helping the government overcome road accidents, especially in accident-prone areas like Ipoh,” he said at Persada PLUS here today.
He cited figures from the Institute of Road Safety which showed that 80.6% of road accidents are caused by human factors.
A further 13.2% are caused by road conditions, while 6.2% are caused by vehicle conditions, he said.
He said 20,829 road accidents were recorded during the last Chinese New Year holidays, along with 216 deaths.
He urged motorcyclists to be especially careful on the road, noting that they are involved in more than 80% of accidents. - FMT
