GEORGE TOWN: The education ministry is setting aside RM35.2 million for education departments nationwide to hire relief teachers to replace those going on leave.
Education Minister Maszlee Malik said this would benefit schools with teachers going on leave exceeding 28 days for maternity, medical or annual leave purposes.
Maszlee also said staffing at all schools would be improved from January next year.
In addition there will be improvements to school infrastructure as well as technology-related upgrades.
Maszlee said schools are now required to conduct their own assessments to recognise strengths and weaknesses.
On teachers being unhappy that they were forced to be invigilators for the Sijil Persekolahan Malaysia (SPM) examination during the school holidays, Maszlee said this would not be the case from this year as the examination would be staggered into two phases – in October and November – during the schooling session.
Maszlee said this to some 3,500 teachers from all over the country during the 48th National Teachers’ Day celebration in Bayan Lepas here today.
He honoured several teachers for their international achievements, including K A Razhiyah Mohamed Khutty, who was awarded Asia’s Best Special Education Teacher by the Special Education Network and Inclusion Association in Hong Kong on Feb 24. She is also listed as one of the top 50 teachers in the Global Teachers’ Prize 2018.
Maszlee also congratulated another special education teacher, Muhamad Khairul Anuar Hussin of SMK Taman Universiti 2, Johor Bahru, who was a finalist in the Global Teachers’ Prize 2019.
The event was officiated by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who presented the National Teacher of the Year award to Nawi Ismail of Terengganu, who recently retired as a teacher after 37 years of service. - FMT
