NRD lodges police report on 'citizenship for Chinese nationals' claim

The National Registration Department has lodged a police report against social media accounts spreading the news that Chinese citizens have been issued with MyKad.
The report was lodged this morning around 9am at the Putrajaya police headquarters by NRD officers, according to director-general Ruslin Jusoh.
“The NRD has lodged a police report over the accusations from several social media accounts which claimed that the NRD gave MyKad to foreign citizens.
“What we want here is for the police to carry out a thorough investigation with regard to this accusation issue, as the information on social media is not true at all,” he said. -Mkini
NRD previously released a statement saying the pictures going viral claiming the government were granting citizenship to Chinese immigrants were untrue.
Ruslin (second from left) explained that one picture depicting a MyKad of a Chinese woman belonged to a Chinese national who has been married to a Malaysian citizen for over 20 years.
She was previously holding a red identity card, MyPR, and had applied for citizenship under Article 15(1) of the Federal Constitution. She was granted her Malaysian citizenship in 2017, Ruslin said.
“I hope that all the social media users stop all these accusations against the NRD, that the department is very lax in issuing such documents to foreigners.
“This is not true at all and for the record, we do not choose applicants based on their ancestry or citizenship in the granting of Malaysian citizenship," Ruslin said.
“In fact, we will be guided by the rules under the Federal Constitution as well as the National Registration Act 1959.
“Therefore, there is no such issue that the NRD easily grants citizenship to foreigners.”
Ruslin went on to explain that another viral picture depicting five MyKas supposedly granted to Chinese nationals were actually part of a forgery syndicate from 2015.
“The issue has been going on since 2015, whereby these five Chinese nationals are part of a forgery syndicate and it took place in Sabah,” he said, adding that the case was handed over to the MACC back in 2015. -Mkini
