155k civil servants work from home, saving 334k litres of fuel - Fahmi

A total of 155,000 civil servants have registered to work from home since the policy took effect on April 15, resulting in an estimated savings of 334,000 litres of fuel, equivalent to RM678,000, as of yesterday.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, who also serves as the government spokesperson, said Chief Secretary to the Government Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar briefed the cabinet on the policy's progress during today's meeting.

"Today, the chief secretary updated the cabinet on the status of the work-from-home implementation for civil servants," Fahmi said during a post-cabinet media briefing on the global supply crisis.

He highlighted that the policy is among the government's measures to manage the impact of global supply disruptions, while also optimising resources more efficiently.

Fahmi added that the chief secretary has been directed to gather information from the private sector regarding the arrangements to assess the total savings achievable at the national level.

"This is important to provide a comprehensive picture of how effective work-from-home initiatives are in reducing fuel consumption and operational costs," he said.

The government will continue to review and strengthen this approach as part of ongoing efforts to ensure more sustainable resource management amid global uncertainty, Fahmi added.

The work-from-home policy for the public service sector took effect on April 15 as a strategic government measure to strengthen national resilience in facing global supply disruptions following the conflict in West Asia.
