Usno quits GRS, Pandikar steps down from coalition roles

KOTA KINABALU: The United Sabah National Organisation (Usno) has announced its withdrawal from Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS).

In a Facebook post on Warta Usno, the party said its president Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia has also formally resigned as deputy chairman of the coalition and relinquished all related government positions.

The decision was conveyed during a meeting with chief minister and GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor yesterday.

Usno's top leadership subsequently endorsed the move unanimously during its Supreme Council meeting today.

In the post, the party cited a growing lack of alignment in governance and policy direction, particularly following the Sabah state election, as the primary reason for its exit.

"Differences in administrative approach and policy priorities have made continued cooperation within the coalition untenable."

GRS secretary-general Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said he had not heard of any official announcement by the party.

"However, Pandikar did submit his resignation letter as one of the deputy presidents of GRS yesterday to the chief minister," he said when contacted.

Despite the split, the party expressed appreciation to Hajiji and all GRS component parties for their past cooperation.

During the last Sabah general election, Pandikar contested in an 11-cornered fight for the Pintasan seat under the GRS ticket.

The former Dewan Rakyat speaker received 3,605 votes, while Datuk Fairuz Renddan garnered 4,675 votes to win the seat with a majority of 1,070 votes.

Pandikar's wife, Puan Sri Diana Diego, who contested under the Usno ticket as a GRS candidate, received 1,721 votes in the Sekong constituency. Parti Warisan assemblyman Alias Sani garnered 6,487 votes.

Prior to the dissolution of the state legislative assembly, Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku and Sabah Progressive Party had also withdrawn from the coalition.

GRS, which was formed in 2020, is now left with Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, Parti Bersatu Sabah, Liberal Democratic Party, Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah and Parti Cinta Sabah. - NST
