What’s holding up Tamim’s arrest, asks Rayer

Jelutong MP urges the police and home ministry to give an update on the case of the activist who had allegedly desecrated a Hindu symbol.

Jelutong MP RSN Rayer asked if the home ministry had taken legal and diplomatic measures to secure the return of activist Tamim Dahri Abdul Razak, who is set to be charged on May 17.
PETALING JAYA:
A DAP MP has questioned the delay in locating and arresting activist Tamim Dahri Abdul Razak, who is set to be charged on May 17 for allegedly desecrating a sacred Hindu symbol.

Jelutong MP RSN Rayer asked if the home ministry had taken legal and diplomatic measures to secure the return of Tamim, who is reported to be in Saudi Arabia.

“Why have the inspector-general of police and the home minister offered no explanation for the delay in arresting Tamim till today?” Rayer, who is also a lawyer, asked in a statement.

He said he did not want the authorities to give vague responses such as “action is being taken” or “investigations are ongoing”.

He warned the authorities that delays would spark speculation while ambiguity would lead to anger, especially when sensitive matters like race or religion were involved.

“For this reason, I demand that the IGP and the home minister come forward with clearer and firmer explanations on the status of the case. I want to know the latest updates,” he said.

Tamim was supposed to be charged in the Langkawi magistrates’ court on March 17 under Section 295 of the Penal Code for defiling a sacred object with the intention of insulting a religion.

However, the prosecution sought for at least two months to enable him to be brought before the court, saying he was in Saudi Arabia after travelling to Riyadh from Bangkok.

Some 192 police reports had been lodged against Tamim following a video showing him allegedly desecrating the trishul, a sacred Hindu object.

Tamim, who was at the forefront of a campaign against allegedly “illegal” Hindu temples, claimed he was unaware that he had desecrated a trishul, saying he mistook it for a “rusty piece of metal”.

On the same day that Tamim was supposed to be charged, independent preacher Zamri Vinoth and activist Arun Dorasamy were charged in separate courts with making statements allegedly conducive to public mischief. They claimed trial. - FMT
