Rafizi: My opposition to FWCMS extension recorded in Cabinet minutes

KUALA LUMPUR: Former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli has refuted claims that he did not speak out against the extension of the Foreign Workers Centralised Management System (FWCMS) contract while he was in cabinet.

Rafizi said he opposed a proposal to renew the contract for the FWCMS in writing and that this was recorded in cabinet meeting minutes.

He said the proposal for the extension of the FWCMS contract had been brought to the cabinet by the home ministry.

"I stated my disagreement and urged for the proposal to be reviewed," Rafizi said in a statement today.

He was responding Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan's political secretary, Aizuddin Abd Gaffal, who criticised him for only raising the issue after quitting the cabinet.

"At the time, Aizuddin served as the special functions officer to the home minister, and he should remember that I voiced my objections in writing."

Rafizi said he disagreed with the proposal then as the Human Resources Ministry had already spent RM20 million to develop the Integrated Foreign Worker Management System (ePPAx) which is owned by the government.

"The ePPAx was developed for foreign worker management," he said, adding that at the same time, the government had already agreed to Multi-Tier Levy Management to reduce the reliance on foreign workers.

"The Human Resources Ministry then proposed using ePPAx for the management of foreign workers.

"The fact remains that my views on the contract extension (for the FWCMS) and governance issues are recorded in government meetings and correspondence." = NST
