PETALING JAYA:
Demand for Malaysian medical tourism among Indonesians remains strong, based on the reception the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) garnered at the Malaysia Fair 2026 in Jakarta.

The fair, which started yesterday and concludes on Sunday, brings together 20 Malaysian healthcare providers under one roof, as well as tourism stakeholders and educational institutions.

The participating healthcare providers include MHTC’s flagship medical tourism hospitals, namely the National Heart Institute, Island Hospital Penang, Mahkota Medical Centre, and Subang Jaya Medical Centre.

Also taking part are the council’s member hospitals, including Alpha IVF & Women’s Specialists, Damansara Specialist Hospital, Northern Heart Hospital Penang, Puteri Specialist Hospital, and Sunway Medical Centre.

The fair was launched by MHTC’s brand ambassador, national songstress Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin, who shared her own healthcare experience of trying to conceive for nearly 10 years.

“I understand how important it is for patients to receive not only quality treatment but also reassurance, understanding, and hope throughout the process.

“As a Malaysian, I am proud to help share the strengths of Malaysian healthcare with our friends in Indonesia and the wider region,” she said in a press release.

MTHC CEO S Suriaghandi said the event reflected the council’s continued commitment to bolstering the presence of Malaysian healthcare in Indonesia, especially Jakarta, a key high-potential market.

“Through this platform, we aim to bring trusted Malaysian healthcare closer to Indonesian communities while reinforcing Malaysia’s position as a preferred destination for quality healthcare, compassionate care, and seamless patient experience,” he said.

In 2025, Indonesia contributed about RM2.2 billion in healthcare travel revenue to Malaysia, a 23% year-on-year rise.

There were also more than 970,000 Indonesian healthcare travellers to Malaysia last year, a 16% increase from 2024.

Most of the Indonesian patients travelled to Malaysia for health screenings, gastroenterology, cancer treatment, endocrinology, cardiology, and orthopaedic surgery.

Organised with Tourism Malaysia in conjunction with the Malaysia Year of Medical Tourism 2026 campaign, the Malaysia Fair 2026 offers Indonesian visitors exclusive access to world-class healthcare services, travel experiences and study opportunities.

Those looking to book vacations have access to top travel agencies like Dwidaya Tour, TX Travel, and Habibi Tours, which offer curated packages paired with the official airline partner, Malaysia Airlines.

Meanwhile, private universities like Taylor’s University, UCSI University, and INTI International University were on-site to provide consultations for prospective students and parents looking to Malaysia for higher education. - FMT
