RTD seizes 30 luxury vehicles in Terengganu crackdown

KEMAMAN: The Terengganu Road Transport Department (RTD) has seized 30 luxury vehicles since January under its Op Luxury crackdown for various offences, mainly expired road tax and driving without valid insurance.

Its director Mohd Zamri Samion said a total of 130 luxury vehicles owned by individuals and companies were inspected during the operation, which ran from early January until today.

"Expired motor vehicle licences recorded the highest number of offences with 48 cases, followed by driving without valid insurance coverage with 46 cases.

"Action has been taken against all offenders under the Road Transport Act 1987 and other related regulations," he told a press conference after leading the operation here today.

He said most of the offenders claimed they did not renew their road tax and insurance because the high-end vehicles were only used for short-distance travel.

Among the seized vehicles were models such as Ford Ranger, Volkswagen, Toyota Alphard, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Toyota Harrier.

To curb this growing trend of non-compliance, the RTD has intensified patrols and inspections at strategic locations, including elite residential areas, major highways, city centres and entertainment hotspots.

"We take seriously the attitude of some luxury vehicle owners who seem to think they are immune to the law.

"There will be no compromise when it comes to traffic offences. We will take stern action regardless of the driver's status or the type of vehicle they drive.

"This operation is not meant to penalise any specific group, but to ensure all road users, regardless of status, adhere to the law," he added. - NST
