Giant python gate-crashes wedding reception, hides under car bonnet

KUALA LUMPUR: A massive python found coiled inside the engine bay of a car at UTM Hotel & Residences has gone viral on social media after the vehicle's owner — who was attending a wedding reception — was alerted by a DJ.

A video posted on Threads by user wartawan.jalanan2026 shows three Civil Defence Force (CDF) personnel lifting the bonnet to reveal the large snake, which barely moved as they attempted to remove it.

The owner, who had been attending a wedding at the hotel, was alerted when a DJ announced the car's registration number over the PA system following a report from the hotel's security guard.

The video quickly drew thousands of reactions, with users expressing a mix of horror and amusement.

Residents familiar with the area, however, were less surprised. User syedmuhammadsyihab noted that the area around Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Dewan Perdana Felda on Jalan Maktab, Jalan Gurney, and the surrounding neighbourhoods, had been known python habitats since the 1980s and 1990s.

User nnzmn_ added that pythons were common near their office in the same vicinity, noting: "Quite a few stray cats have gone missing," suggesting the snakes may have been responsible for their disappearance.

User minaminozeellisy amusingly captured the fear of many: "Terrifying. Imagine if no one had noticed. You're driving along and suddenly you're wrestling with a snake."

Others marvelled at the python's size. User rara_debork noted it appeared to have recently fed: "Goodness, it's huge. It looks like it just swallowed something. Look at how bloated its upper body is."

User cappucinoismyfav raised a question many were asking: "I'm more curious how a snake could grow that big in the middle of KL."

User tokeykambing offered a wry observation directed at the reptile itself: "Dear snake... did you not know that lounging in an engine bay with the bonnet shut is already sweltering enough - and the heat these days is something else entirely." - NST
