KUALA LUMPUR: A Sarawak deputy premier has hinted that the next state election could be held soon, telling party members that a "war" was less than 100 days away.
Speaking at the party's 67th anniversary flag-raising ceremony, Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also president of the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP), urged members to prepare for a more intense period of political activity.
"We are fighting a war, less than 100 days from now. So we really need to get going," he was quoted as saying in a Dayak Daily report.
Dr Sim also called on party members to actively share the party's message and defend its achievements.
He said the period ahead was not merely about an election but also Sarawak's broader nation-building agenda.
"This election is a matter of whether Sarawak continues to grow towards 2030 or not. Are we already mature, or are we still growing?
"The difference is that if we are mature after 2030, no one can bully Sarawak," he said.
The Batu Kawa assemblyman said Sarawak was entering what he described as the "final stage of nation-building", with key priorities including health autonomy, education autonomy and the full implementation of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
"We must tell the people of Sarawak why they need to give us a bigger mandate, not just another chance, but a stronger mandate than before, because we are at the final stage of nation-building.
"This is the time for every Sarawakian to come together so that we can achieve political independence, financial independence, as well as progress in health autonomy, education autonomy and the rest of MA63," he said. - FMT
