KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian industries must accelerate automation and gradually reduce their reliance on foreign workers, said Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani ahead of the tabling of 2027 Budget next month.
Johari said businesses' dependence on foreign labour has discouraged automation and kept cost structures tied to foreign worker wages.
"We want to emphasise the importance of bringing automation into our operations and production as quickly as possible," he said after opening the Voices of Her 2026 Forum at the World Trade Centre here today.
