Judge Rohatul Akmar Abdullah sentenced Nurlela, 32, after she pleaded guilty to the charge.
The court ordered the sentence to take effect from the date of her arrest on July 29.
According to the charge, Nurlela, who is from Batam, Indonesia, had promoted prostitution through MiChat using an account named "Wawa", offering sexual services to members of the public for the purpose of sexual exploitation.
She committed the offence in a hotel room on Jalan Tun Sri Lanang, Pengkalan Rama Tengah, about 8.35pm on July 29.
She was charged under Section 372(1)(e) of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum prison sentence of 15 years, whipping and a fine upon conviction.
According to the facts of the case, a team from the D7 Branch of the Melaka police Criminal Investigation Department conducted Op E-Noda at the hotel following intelligence on prostitution activities through the MiChat application.
During the raid, Nurlela was arrested in a hotel room and her mobile phone was seized to assist investigations.
Checks on the accused's mobile phone found that she had used the MiChat account named "Wawa" to offer sexual services to customers for between RM130 and RM250.
There were also conversations between her and several people involving negotiations on prices, meeting locations and cash payment methods, as well as the exchange of photographs and personal information before arrangements were made.
Earlier, Nurlela, who was unrepresented, pleaded for a fine instead of a prison sentence, saying it was her first offence and that she was also supporting her mother in her hometown.
Deputy public prosecutor Nor Asnini Kamarudin, however, urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence and argued that imprisonment was mandatory under Section 372(1)(e) of the Penal Code.
The court subsequently sentenced her to 12 months' jail from the date of her arrest, and Nurlela was seen crying after the proceedings ended. - NST
