PM undergoes abdominal hernia surgery

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has successfully undergone elective laparoscopic surgery to treat an abdominal hernia (para-umbilical hernia), according to his medical team.

Dr Asri Rangga Abdullah Ramaiah, who heads the medical team, said the procedure went smoothly and was performed by a team of specialists.

“He is undergoing physiotherapy and remains under the supervision of the medical specialist team to ensure a smooth recovery,” he added in a statement posted on Anwar’s X account.

Earlier, Malaysiakini reported that Anwar, who celebrates his 79th birthday today, would be undergoing a two-day routine medical check-up.

"Let us pray that all of the prime minister's tests and procedures will be facilitated and that he will be blessed with long-lasting health so that he can return to carrying out his duties as usual in the near future, God willing," his senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah said in a statement without elaborating on the nature of the examinations or procedures.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he would chair the upcoming cabinet meeting in Anwar’s absence.

The BN chairperson said Anwar had personally informed him last Tuesday about the minor surgical procedure the premier would undergo.

However, Malaysiakini understands that the cabinet meeting, which is held on Wednesdays, has been cancelled.

Yesterday, Anwar visited Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof and former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who are both receiving treatment at the National Heart Institute.

Fadillah is scheduled to undergo heart bypass surgery. - Mkini
