PETALING JAYA:
Malaysia hopes to finalise a memorandum of understanding on defence cooperation with Iran, says defence minister Khaled Nordin.

Khaled said this was among the matters discussed with Iran’s acting minister of defence and armed forces logistics, Seyed Majid Ebn-e-Reza, during a phone call today.

He also conveyed Malaysia’s condolences over the deaths of Iranian leaders, security personnel and civilians in the ongoing conflict with the US and Israel, and said Malaysia hopes the ceasefire can be maintained in the interest of peace and stability in the region.

“In facing this conflict, Iran has demonstrated resilience, including through its defence capabilities.

“Malaysia sees room for more substantive defence cooperation, based on the close friendship between the two countries.

“Going forward, Malaysia hopes the MoU on defence cooperation can be finalised as an official instrument to strengthen defence ties between the two countries,” he said in a Facebook post,

Khaled said Malaysia appreciated Iran’s cooperation and goodwill in facilitating safe passage for Malaysian vessels through the Strait of Hormuz during the conflict.

He also welcomed Iran’s participation at next year’s Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima), which he said would be a key platform to explore broader defence cooperation. - FMT
