MN seat formula contradicts Johor PN’s election plans, says state chief

Johor PN chairman Sahruddin Jamal questions whether PAS itself backs Annuar Musa's proposal.

PETALING JAYA:
A proposed Muafakat Nasional 2.0 seat-sharing formula runs counter to plans by Perikatan Nasional to contest all seats in the upcoming state election, says Johor PN chairman Sahruddin Jamal.

Sahruddin said the proposal by Annuar Musa, made in his capacity as a PAS central committee member, was framed in the context of MN and had nothing to do with PN.

“It is clearly contradictory. But I would like to ask whether PAS itself agrees with the formula proposed by Annuar, because PAS leaders have yet to express any commitment to MN,” the Johor Bersatu chief told FMT.

Responding to PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man’s call for MN to be revived for the Johor polls, Annuar proposed a seat allocation formula whereby Umno would contest 80% to 90% of Malay-majority seats in Johor while PAS would take between 10% and 20%.

Annuar said such a formula could prevent clashes among Malay-based parties ahead of the 16th general election.

However, Sahruddin said Johor PN remains committed to contesting all the 56 state seats.

“PN will contest all the seats we have agreed on. If PAS reduces the number of seats it contests, we will contest those PAS seats,” he said.

The Johor state assembly dissolved on June 1, paving the way for an election within the next 60 days.

Despite being aligned at the federal level, Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan have announced that they will each contest all the 56 seats in the state assembly.
