Trees, the missing ingredient in urban living

LIVING close to nature is often associated with a slower, calmer way of life.

Increasingly, however, research suggests that greenery is not merely something pleasant to look at. It can also contribute to physical and mental wellbeing.

The World Health Organization notes that urban green spaces can support health by encouraging physical activity, providing psychological relaxation and helping reduce exposure to heat, noise and air pollution.

For residents, the benefits can begin with something as simple as stepping outside.

A walk among trees or landscaped surroundings creates an opportunity to move, breathe and take a break from the demands of modern life.

A systematic review covering 143 studies found that greater exposure to green space was associated with lower heart rate, lower diastolic blood pressure and lower levels of salivary cortisol, a marker associated with stress.

Nature can also provide a valuable mental reset. Another systematic review found an inverse relationship between exposure to nature and both perceived and physiological measures of stress.

More recent research continues to point towards positive effects of urban nature on mental wellbeing, including reductions in negative moods such as anxiety and depression.

This is where the philosophy behind e.Sentral SmartCity in Damansara West begins to take on greater meaning.

Developed by HCK Capital Group around its “Tech & Trees” concept, e.Sentral SmartCity seeks to combine the convenience of intelligent urban living with meaningful access to greenery.

HCK says the development dedicates 17% of its total area to green spaces, exceeding the minimum landscape requirement, with a 12,600 sq ft green sanctuary at podium level designed as a place for residents to unwind and reconnect with nature.

The concept extends beyond landscaping. With recreational facilities, landscaped spaces and a Health Hub offering services including traditional Chinese medicine, dental and veterinary care, wellness is woven into the broader living experience.

In a city where concrete can easily dominate the landscape, having greenery within reach can be a welcome daily luxury.

At e.Sentral SmartCity, nature is therefore not simply something to admire from a distance. It forms part of the environment residents return to, walk through and experience every day.

Because sometimes, a healthier way of living begins with having somewhere green to breathe.— Focus Malaysia
