SHAH ALAM: The status of a vacant Selangor state assembly seat is expected to be finalised this week following allegations that the assemblyman has been disqualified.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the decision would be announced after the Selangor speaker receives a note on the matter from the legal adviser.
"That is the speaker's prerogative, not my decision. The legal adviser will prepare the note.
"I think by this week at the latest, we will inform the relevant parties of the position and status (of the state seat)," he said at a press conference after the Selangor menteri besar's gathering with civil servants here today.
Amirudin said the state government would abide by any decision made by the Election Commission on the possibility of a by-election in the state.
"That is the EC's decision, not mine, as the EC will conduct the assessment. Whether it has been three years (into the term) or whether a by-election needs to be held or not, we have to comply," he said.
At the same time, he dismissed the possibility of a straight fight should a by-election be held.
"It could become a three- or four-cornered contest. Perhaps Bersama may enter, Bersatu may enter.
"It is unlikely to be a one-on-one contest because political dynamics can change.
"So, we will look at the circumstances and situation. We still have at least one year before the term ends," he said.
Amirudin previously confirmed that the state government received information regarding the possibility of a by-election in Selangor.
However, he said that the matter was still awaiting an official announcement from the state speaker.
He said checks were being conducted with the legal adviser following allegations involving the disqualification of a state assemblyman. - NST
