JPJ to meet bike rally organisers following reports of frequent accidents

 The director-general of road transport says all participants at motoring events are required to comply with traffic laws and vehicle technical regulations.

The road transport department will step up enforcement against participants of motorcycle gathering programmes, including RXZ Members, and will meet with the organisers amid recurring accidents frequently linked to such events, JPJ director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli said today.

Several accidents have been reported involving participants travelling to the RXZ Members 8.0 gathering at the Gong Badak motor racing circuit in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu, as well as other road users.

Three motorcyclists were killed and two injured in four separate accidents in Pahang, while in Kuala Nerus, a 13-year-old boy suffered 60% burns and is currently in an induced coma.

Aedy said JPJ does not prohibit the organisation of motoring events, but all participants are required to comply with traffic laws and vehicle technical regulations.

He said JPJ had previously advised organisers and participants to ensure their vehicles are in safe condition and comply with all regulations throughout their journey to the event location and during the programme.

“We are not stopping such events as long as regulations are followed. If they are not, we will take action without compromise, especially against vehicle modification offences and violations of the law,” he told reporters here today.

Aedy said JPJ will not compromise against any participant who endangers other road users. He said the department had taken note of public complaints regarding traffic congestion and the actions of certain participants who ride recklessly, posing a threat to road users’ safety. - FMT
