The Umno vice-president says the priority is to strengthen the new Negeri Sembilan government.
Wan Rosdy said the immediate priority was to strengthen the new Negeri Sembilan government following the state election, Berita Harian reported.
“We haven’t discussed that yet. For now, we want to settle matters in Negeri Sembilan first. After that, we will discuss other issues.
“Perhaps after that, we will look at developments in Melaka,” he was quoted as saying after an event in Temerloh today.
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang had previously said the BN-PN cooperation in Negeri Sembilan would be assessed from time to time, fuelling speculation that the arrangement could be extended to the Melaka election and eventually GE16.
BN chairman and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had said the pact with PN would be extended for Melaka.
Yesterday, BN and PN won 25 of the 36 seats contested in the Negeri Sembilan election, securing enough seats to form the state government with a two-thirds majority.
BN emerged as the largest bloc with 18 seats, while PN won seven. Pakatan Harapan secured the remaining 11 seats.
Last night, Pakatan Harapan election director Amirudin Shari blamed the PH defeat at the Negeri Sembilan polls on the exploitation of identity politics by its rivals.
Wan Rosdy dismissed claims that BN had resorted to racial campaigning, saying the election outcome showed that voters had based their decisions on the candidates’ credibility and the promise of a stable government.
“If we had played the race card, how could an MCA candidate have won in a constituency where the majority of voters are Malays? Malay voters still supported the MCA candidate,” he said. - FMT
