Negri Sembilan's special holiday on Monday not compulsory for private sector, says Labour Dept

 

PUTRAJAYA: Private sector employers in Negri Sembilan may choose whether to grant their employees the special holiday on Monday (Aug 3), as it is an optional public holiday.

The Peninsular Malaysia Labour Department said in a statement on Sunday (Aug 2) that the holiday is not mandatory for private sector employees.

However, any employer in the state who chooses to observe the Negri Sembilan special holiday as a public holiday must provide employees with a paid public holiday.

“Employers may, with the consent of employees, substitute the holiday with another day, as provided under Section 60D(1A) of the Employment Act 1955,” it said.

Earlier, the Negri Sembilan state government declared Monday (Aug 3) a special holiday in appreciation of the people of Negri Sembilan and all parties who worked hard to ensure the smooth running of the 16th Negri Sembilan state election, which ended on Saturday (Aug 1).

The department said the declaration of the special holiday was made in accordance with Subsection 9(1) of the Holidays Act 1951, which allows a state authority to declare any day as a public holiday for the state. — Bernama
